Drive-in Pallet Racking

Drive-in racking removes the aisles. The forklift drives straight into the lane and sets each pallet on rails running the depth of the block. Floor that would have been aisle becomes storage, so a drive-in block holds 50% to 70% more pallets than conventional pallet racking in the same footprint.

Build a block ten metres by ten metres and roughly eighty per cent of that floor area ends up holding stock, however many pallets high you choose to go.

Where it is the right choice

• Large quantities of the same palletised product.
• Last in, first out rotation is acceptable.
• Pallet density matters more than picking speed.
• Cold storage, where every cubic metre is paid for twice.
• Buffer stock and bulk buys held for later.

The trade-off

Pallets load and unload from the same end of the lane, so the last pallet in is the first one out. Reaching a pallet in the middle of a lane means taking out the ones in front of it. Two other things are worth knowing before you commit. A drive-in system is built for the space it goes into and does not move to another part of the warehouse easily. And forklift access is limited to certain less bulky machines, which is a cost to factor into the project.

Drive-in is the wrong answer if you hold many different palletised products, pick orders fast, need to reach every pallet directly, or work to strict first in, first out rotation. In those cases adjustable pallet racking will serve you better.
